A violet or purple variety of quartz, the amethyst stone has been prized for millennia, adoring the fingers of bishops, the coronation regalia of the British monarchy and the tombs of Ancient Egyptian pharaohs. In Ancient Greece, the amethyst was associated with Bacchus, the god of wine. It was believed to help its wearer think clearly, as well as prevent intoxication.
